Padre Pio is considered one of the most powerful intercessors. He suffered in unimaginable ways for most of his life. Padre Pio suffered from the stigmata and he also suffered a wound on his should, the same wound Christ suffered from carrying His cross to Mount Golgotha. In addition to his wounds, Padre Pio was physically attacked by satan, slept and ate minimally but despite all of this, he remained joyous. All of these sufferings were embraced by Padre Pio for the sake of mankind. He welcomed and united his pain with that of Christ's. When Padre Pio died, his body was miraculously drained of its blood and his wounds were heal, just as Christ's blood was drained on the cross and His body healed in the resurrection.
In this painting, Padre Pio is smiling at us while holding a white dahlia, which is representative of rebirth, in front of the Garden of Gethsemane. This image is meant to invite its audience to embrace their sufferings and to unite them with the sufferings of Christ during His Passion. Our sufferings are a means to renewal and rebirth in Christ.
"I do not know what will happen to me; I only know one thing for certain, that the Lord will never fall short of His promises. “Do not fear, I will make you suffer, but I will also give you the strength to suffer,” Jesus tells me continually. “I want your soul to be purified and tried by a daily hidden martyrdom”. . .”How many times,” Jesus said to me a little while ago, “would you have abandoned me, my son, if I had not crucified you.”
- St. Pio of Pietrelcina
